M-Power: The Naked Truth
Overview:
From the writer and producer of the BBC's Sony award-winning Sex Tour comes M-Power: The Naked Truth, a course about healthy relationships and building aspirations as a form of contraception.
The 2008 review of Sex and Relationship Education in schools found that "there needs to be a stronger focus in SRE on "relationships" and the skills and values that young people need as they progress through childhood and adolescence, into adulthood". The Teenage Pregnancy Strategy recognises that teen pregnancy is both a result and cause of poverty, low achievement and low aspirations.
M-Power: The Naked Truth looks at the issues young people face and aims to empower them to make better decisions for themselves in the future. The course uses music and the media to engage and deliver the important messages whilst covering topics such as self esteem and self respect; staying safe on the internet; STI's; understanding the different forms of abuse and what to do about them; being single; losing your virginity or not; and other issues young people face as they progress to young adults. At the end of the course we invite local sex health workers in to ensure young people know where their local GUM clinic is and what happens there.
Aims and Objectives:
- To encourage young people to make informed decisions about the choices they face in their relationships
- To help young people stay safe on the internet when making friends
- To provide information on services in the local area
- To boost confidence and self-esteem
- To raise aspirations
